Everest Base Camp Trekking
nepal everest base camp trekking

The Everest or Solu Khumbu area is the second most popular trekking destination in Nepal. The primary objective of Everest treks is either the Everest base camp, about 5.340 meters, or Kala Pattar, an unassuming 5.545 meter hump on the southern flank of Pumori (7.161 meters), which provides a fine view of Everest (8.848 metres).

One of the biggest problems with the Everest trek is the high likelihood of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), commonly known as altitude sickness, a potentially deadly illness caused by too rapid an ascent to high elevation. Be sure to read the section on Mountain Sickness if you are planning an Everest trek. If you suffer any symptoms of altitude sickness it is still possible to make a fascinating trek to less ambitious destinations including Namche Bazar, the administrative headquarters of the Khumbu region; Khumjung or Thami, more typical Sherpa villages; or Thyangboche monastery, from which an excellent view may he had of Everest and its more spectacular neighbor Ama Dablam (6.856 metres).

The Everest region may be reached by STOL (short take-off and landing) airstrips at LukIa (2.800 metres), Shyangboche (3.700 metres), or Phaphlu (2364 metres) or by an eight-day trek from the road head at Jiri, 188 km from Kathmandu. Those who fly to Lukla miss the historic and culturally fascinating route followed by the Everest expeditions of the ''50s and '60s although the trek has changed substantially in the past 30 years. It is best to take the time to walk from Jiri, then after acclimatization and conditioning afforded by the trek, visit base camp or climb Kala Pattar and either fly out from Lukla or walk back by an alternative route to Kathmandu. Those who insist their time is limited can fly to Lukla and spend as little as six days to visit Namche Bazar and Thyangboche. It is ill advised to attempt a quick visit to base camp, because of the lack of time for acclimatization, if you fly in to one of these airstrips. You should allow at least eight or nine days to reach the base camp region if you fly to Lukla; the return from base camp to Lukla can be made in as few as four or five days, so an absolute minimum of two weeks is required for a safe trek to base camp. The timing is further complicated because flights to LukIa often do not work as planned, so those with a tight schedule would do well to allow a few spare days for both the flight in and the flight out.

Ghale Treks and Tours offers special tailor made everest base camp trip as per itinerary below:
 » Itinerary Details:

Day 01  Arrive Kathmandu
Upon your arrival, We will be met at Kathmandu airport by our staff. Our baggage will be loaded into our vehicle and we will be driven to our hotel. These first moments in Kathmandu are often the most memorable. Once we are situated in our hotel we will have a short team meeting and orientation.

Day 02  Lukla to Monzo
Weather permitting we will have a short but spectacular (25 min) flight to Lukla (9,200ft) for an unforgettable landing. Once all our gear has arrived and has been strapped to yaks or picked up by porters we will really start our trek. After about 4 hours we will arrive at the village of Monzo. Overnight in lodge.

Day 03  Monzo to Namche Bazaar
Today we will officially enter Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) National Park.. We will ascend ‘Namche Hill’ to the Sherpa town of Namche Bazaar (11,270ft) and unofficial capital of the Khumbu. You will get your first view of Mt Everest about half way up the hill. Overnight in lodge.

Day 04  Rest Day in Namche Bazaar
As we need to acclimatize, this is a great day to re-group, rest and sightsee this beautiful village. This is a perfect opportunity to pick up souvenirs for friends and family back home. You can make the short, but steep hike to the Everest View Hotel where weather permitting you will get a great view of Mt Everest. Overnight in lodge.

Day 05   Namche Bazaar to Tengboche Monastery
Today we go to Tengboche Monastery (12,700ft). This Monastery is the spiritual center of the Khumbu and a training center for new monks. With luck we will be able to watch the monks worship and receive a blessing from the high lama. Overnight in lodge.

Day 06   Tengboche Monastery to Dingboche
We hike to Dingboche (14,000ft). During this spectacular day we will cross the famous suspension bridge from which there is the classic view of the mountain, Ama Dablam. . Overnight in lodge.

Day 07   Rest Day in Dingboche
Rest day in Dingboche. There are several beautiful day hikes from the village. Depending on how well the team is acclimatizing we will probably hike up a ridge and get amazing views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Alternatively we will simply rest and take in the views of surrounding peaks. Overnight in lodge.

Day 08   Dingboche to Lobuche
We will trek to the small village of Lobuche (16,170ft). En route to Lobuche we will pass by a number of stone memorials to honor climbers lost on nearby peaks, mostly Mt Everest. Overnight in lodge.

Day 09   Lobuche to Gorak Shep
This is a big day – have your cameras ready. The views are going to be unbelievable. We will trek to Gorak Shep where we will have lunch. Then we will walk to the summit of Kala Pattar (18,190ft) where you will get the best view of Mt Everest without climbing it. Overnight in lodge..

Day 10  Gorak Shep to  Everest Basecamp, back to Gorak Shep.
This is the final uphill push to Mt Everest basecamp. There may be some climbing teams already set up. Depending on time We will hike up to the start of the notorious Khumbu icefall. We will return to Gorak Shep. Overnight in lodge.

Day 11   Gorak Shep to Pangboche
We descend to the village of Pangboche via the high altitude clinic at Pheriche. This clinic is staffed by volunteer Doctors and nurses, often from the US to help climbers who are suffering from high altitude sickness. Overnight in lodge.

Day 12 Pangboche to Kumjung
We continue or descent to the village of Kumjung. This is the birthplace and home of our Sirdar, Kami Tenzing Sherpa. He is very well known in this village. He will probably invite us to his home for tea. Overnight in lodge.

Day 13   Kumjung to Monzo
From Kumjung it is a short hike to Namche Bazaar. We will stop and give you time to make any final souvenier purchases before continuing on down the hill to Monzo. Overnight in lodge.

Day 14  Monzo to Lukla
Even though we are going down the valley the trek has a final sting for us. We must hike UP a hill to get to Lukla. Overnight in lodge.
Day 15 Lukla to Kathmandu
Early morning fly to Kathmandu by domestic aircraft, upon arrival in Kathmandu transferrto hotel, halfday city sightseeing in Kathmandu city, evening farewell dinner at nepalese cultural dance show restaurant. over night at Hotels.
Day 16 Departure
Transfer to Airport fly onward.

Instead of fly we can start from Jiri and trek back to Jiri (for 28 days) or one way fly also possible, and it takes for 3 weeks.
