Tsechu...TSE Meaning date and CHU meaning the tenth is an annual religious festival conducted annually coinciding on the 10th day of the 10th month of the Bhutanese calendar. The festival commemorates the birth of Guru Rimpoche who born of a lotus flower came to Bhutan around 8th century, bringing Buddhism to the country.
Tsechus are the biggest festival in the country (lasting from 3 to 5 days) It is here that Bhutanese drowned themselves in their best outfits and flock the celebration with home cooked picnic lunch and witness various mask dances which signifies themselves from ground purification, victory over the evil spirits, conduction of one's Karma and 8 forms of manifestation Guru took to overcome various deities in propagating Buddhism.
Tsechu usually ends with unfurling a giant THANKA (a huge embodied cloth piece depicting a religious figure predominantly that of Guru.This is popularly known to Bhutanese as THONGDRUL...THONG meaning to witness or see and DRUL meaning to free or release. Bhutanese believe that a look at the giant Thanka blesses them and releases them from the chain of cyclic sins. we Ghale Treks recommend you the Thimphu & Wangdue Tsechu festival tour itinerary as per below:
Day 1| 11th Sept, 2010 | Saturday Arrival in Paro
Upon arrival at Paro airport, we will receive you and transfer to your hotel by car, (15 mins). After lunch we will see the rich history of Bhutan exhibited in the 17th century National Museum. The Paro Dzong, a massive fortress built in the 17th century now houses the monastic body. A tour of this beautiful Dzong will introduce us to the unique aspects of the Bhutanese Buddhism. A lovely stroll downhill from the Dzong over an old cantilever bridge wraps up an eventful first day in this magical kingdom.
Overnight: Paro | Altitude: 2200m Day 2| 12th Sept, 2010 | Sunday Paro sightseeing
Taktsang or the tiger’s nest temple is the most revered temple to the Buddhist. This magical temple clings to a vertical granite cliff 800m above the valley. Legend has it that in the 8th century, Guru Rimpochey, a tantric master flew here on the back of a tigress and meditated in a cave around which the temple is built. A hike to this temple will take up most of our morning. In the afternoon, we will host a special Buddhist prayer ceremony at the beautiful 1200 year old Kyichu Lhakhang Temple, to bring us good luck for the rest of the journey.
Overnight: Paro Day 3| 13th Sept, 2010 | Monday Paro to Punakha (3 ½ Hrs)
Morning after the breakfast drive to warm valley of Punakha through Dochula pass at 3010m. When the weather permits one can enjoy a spectacular view of the highest mountains of Bhutan at a sight that stretches almost 180 degrees. After a short tea break continue to sub tropical Punakha. In the afternoon visit the Souvenir Making Center and Punakha Dzong (fortress) which houses the most elaborated temple in the country.
Overnight: Punakha | Altitude: 1350m Day 4| 14th Sept, 2010 | Tuesday Punakha to Phobjikha (2 ½ Hrs)
Check out of the hotel and visit Chimi Lhakhang on foot, the temple of fertility associated with religious art of phallus and continue to Phobjikha over the highest road pass on your trip at 3140m.Visit Gangtey Gompa, the largest and the only monastery of the Nyingmapa sect in western Bhutan. Evening relax in your hotel or take a stroll.
Overnight: Phobjikha | Altitude: 2900m Day 5| 15th Sept, 2010 | Wednesday Phobjikha to Wangdue (2 Hrs)
Start early to try for gangtey natural trail, your hike which starts from the Phobjikha Pry School and ends at the monastery takes about an hour to reach the top, meet with your transport and drive to Wangdue. Evening relax in your hotel or take a stroll.

Day 6| 16th Sept, 2010 | Thursday Wangdue Festival
Whole day attend the Wangdue Tshechu, Bhutan most resplendent festival. Masked dancers perform ritualized reenactments of mythical struggles between good and evil forces. Accompanied by Tibetan musicians and the antics of the sacred clowns (atsaras), the Tshechu is a fascinating visual and cultural spectacle unique to Bhutan.

Whole day attend the annual Thimphu Tsechu, Bhutan’s largest and most crowded and beautiful festival. Like Wangdue Tsechu, masked dances, traditional dances and other ritual are preformed here too.
Overnight: Thimphu Day 9| 19th Sept, 2010 | Sunday Thimphu to Paro (1 Hr)
Morning visit the weekend market (Friday, Saturday & Sunday), drive pass by Memorial Chorten (temple) built in memory of the late 3rd King. Visit Changangkha Lhakhang, the oldest temple in the valley, Enclosure where national animal, Takin are kept and Zilukha Nunnery. Lunch in the town, after lunch proceed for Paro. Rest of the time at leisure.

The above rates are applicable per tourist per night halt in Bhutan. The rate can be higher depending upon the nature of services desired beyond the set of entitlements.
On the day of departure from Bhutan, our obligation shall be limited to breakfast only and any extra requirement shall be payable on actual basis.
In order to secure Druk-Air tickets to and from Bhutan and good hotels, tour payment must be made 2 months prior to the date of arrival in Bhutan.
Visa is cleared by the government only after the receipt of full tour payment. Without visa, Druk-Air will not issue tickets. Once the tour reservation has been confirmed, Ghale Treks will provide advance payment options.
