Itinerary

Schedule at a Glance

Embark on this half-day excursion to admire the beautiful traditional architecture and rich culture reminiscent of the medieval era. Experience the lively atmosphere as villagers—men, women, and children—gather in the streets and courtyards, weaving, chatting, and working under the sun. Stroll through the streets and discover skilled wood carvers and sculptors offering handcrafted items at reasonable prices, with many artisans working from home and presenting additional articles for sale. The women devote their leisure time to weaving, knitting, and hand-sewing, while the village is renowned for its exceptional woodcarving skills.

Investigate the vibrant heart of a functioning Newari town in the chowk around the temple, where numerous chortens and a large prayer wheel reflect the area’s diverse religious traditions. Between Bungamati and Khokana, visit the Karya Binayak Temple, dedicated to Ganesh, which offers spectacular views overlooking the Bungamati valley toward the foothills.

Throughout the village, a striking three-story temple dedicated to the local mother goddess, Rudrayeni Mai, captures attention. A similar temple northeast of the village serves the community during times of epidemics.

Solo Traveller

As a traveler from Sweden, I recently embarked on the “Discover Bungamati & Khokana” cultural day trip from Kathmandu, and it was a truly enriching experience. This well-organized tour allowed me to explore two charming villages steeped in traditional Newari culture and history. The serene atmosphere of Bungamati, with its picturesque temples and bustling local life, was a delight to wander through. In Khokana, I was captivated by the unique mustard oil extraction process and the friendly locals who welcomed us into their homes, sharing stories of their daily lives. Our guide provided fascinating insights into the rich culture, customs, and history of the Newar people, making the journey both educational and enjoyable. This day trip is perfect for anyone looking to connect with the authentic cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley.
