Discovering Dharahara: Updated Entry Fees and Charges Implemented Today

Dharahara or the Bhimsen Tower

“Breathtaking Views and Timeless Tales: Discover Dharahara”

Dharahara, also known as Bhimsen Tower, has long stood as a symbol of Nepal’s rich cultural heritage and architectural brilliance. Nestled in the heart of Kathmandu, this majestic tower has graced the skyline since its original construction in the 19th century. As of November 24, access to this iconic structure comes with new entry fees and charges, marking a significant effort to enhance the preservation and maintenance of this national treasure.

Entry Fees and Parking Charges

Visitors to Dharahara will now be required to pay an entry fee starting today. Parking within the premises will also be chargeable. Previously open for free on Constitution Day (September 20) as a trial, the decision to impose charges was approved in last Thursday’s Cabinet meeting.

Entry Fee Breakdown:

  • Adults: NPR 200
  • Children, students, senior citizens, and people with disabilities: NPR 100 (50% discount)
  • Tourists from SAARC countries: NPR 500
  • Tourists from non-SAARC countries: NPR 1,000
  • Visitors entering only the Dharahara premises (without ascending the tower): NPR 50

Additionally, parking fees have been set at NPR 20 per hour for four-wheelers and NPR 10 per hour for two-wheelers. The charges are being imposed on an interim basis under the Special Structure Operation and Management Development Committee (Formation) Order, 2081 BS, with the fee structure approved by the Urban Development Ministry.

Additional Charges

  • Commercial Video Shoots in the Dharahara Complex: NPR 5,000 per hour
  • Photography Sessions: NPR 1,000 per hour
  • Advertisements of National Significance Displayed on the Dharahara Tower: NPR 5,000 per hour

These charges not only aim to secure funds for the maintenance, security, and conservation efforts at this UNESCO World Heritage Site but also enhance the overall visitor experience.

The Historical Significance of Dharahara

Originally built in 1832 by Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa, Dharahara was an architectural marvel of its time, extending up to 61.88 meters. The tower originally featured nine stories, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley. Tragically, the original structure was severely damaged during the earthquake of April 2015. However, the resilience of the Nepali spirit has led to the successful reconstruction of this iconic edifice, which now stands proudly once again.

Visiting Dharahara offers a chance to explore not only its architectural grandeur but also the rich historical narratives that have shaped its existence. The surrounding area is filled with vibrant streets, local markets, and other cultural sites, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Kathmandu.
