Frequently asked questions.

Is Taj Mahal open every day?

The Taj Mahal is open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset, with the exception of Fridays, when it is closed to the public. On Fridays, the site is exclusively accessible to Muslims for afternoon prayers.

Why to visit Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal is an architectural masterpiece that draws thousands of visitors daily. For many, a visit to this iconic historical mausoleum represents a lifelong dream, as it is globally recognized as a symbol of love. Commissioned by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, this UNESCO World Heritage Site stands as a testament to enduring love and exquisite craftsmanship.

What's inside the Taj Mahal?

Within the main tomb of the Taj Mahal lies an ornate eight-sided chamber, adorned with intricate pietra dura inlays of semi-precious stones and a stunning marble lattice screen. However, it is a little-known fact that this chamber actually houses the replica sarcophagi of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan, while their actual graves are buried in a separate location, below this level in a secluded garden.

What are the timings of Taj Mahal?

The Taj Mahal opens daily 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset, remaining closed to general visitors on Fridays. For night viewing, the monument can be accessed for four hours, from 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM, on the full moon night and the two nights before and after it, but this option is unavailable on Fridays or during the month of Ramzan.

Why is it called Taj Mahal?

Contrary to popular belief, the Taj Mahal is not named after its creator, Shah Jahan, but rather after his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal, whose original name was Arjumand Banu Begum. The name “Mumtaz Mahal,” which means “Crown of the Palace,” reflects her status, and “Taj Mahal” is a shortened version of this affectionate title.
